PCO was originally developed in the 1990s by scientists at NASA to treat air in an enclosed environment in the spacecraft. It converts moisture in the air and breaks them up into hydroxyl radicals which are highly reactive. These hydroxyl radicals are small and agile and get pushed into the environment where they attack bigger organic pollutant molecules like fungi, mold, odour bacteria, viruses and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) , breaking apart their chemical bonds and turning them into harmless substances.
